🇺🇸🕰️ Tomorrow is America’s 250th anniversary, an i 🇺🇸🕰️ Tomorrow is America’s 250th anniversary, an important time to celebrate history. The Hegeler Carus Mansion in La Salle, Illinois, is a Gilded Age masterpiece 💡✍️📐 that helped shape the history and growth of La Salle and surrounding communities throughout Starved Rock Country. Completed in 1876 and designed by W. W. Boyington, architect of the famous Chicago Water Tower, the mansion features seven levels, fifty-seven rooms, and about 24,000 square feet, all of which remain virtually unaltered today. Additionally, it is home to America’s oldest existing gymnasium, often described as the oldest private gym in the United States. 🏋 The luxurious home was built for Edward C. Hegeler, a German immigrant and partner in the Mattheissen and Hegeler Zinc Company, and his growing family. In 1887, Hegeler founded the Open Court Publishing Company in the basement of the mansion and hired Dr. Paul Carus, who later married Hegeler’s daughter Mary, to serve as editor. 📜🖋️ The mansion was occupied by members of the family until 2004. In 2007, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. 📚🏛️ Today, the Hegeler Carus Foundation works to preserve the structure 🛠️⚙️ and offers historical tours from the basement all the way to the 7th-floor cupola. The Hegeler Carus Mansion will be open on July 4, 2026, a perfect way to celebrate the holiday.

📜🇺🇸 We’re just days away from America’s 250th anni 📜🇺🇸 We’re just days away from America’s 250th anniversary, and the I&M Canal remains an important part of both U.S. and Illinois history. Completed in 1848, the canal stretched 96 miles from Chicago to La Salle, linking Lake Michigan to the Illinois River and creating a water route to the Mississippi River. 💦 This connection transformed the movement of people and goods throughout the region and helped develop communities throughout Illinois. On August 24, 1984, the I&M Canal was designated as the first National Heritage Area in the United States. In June 2008, an 1840s-replica canal boat, The Volunteer, opened right here in La Salle. ⛴️🐴 Today, as part of @illinoisamerica250’s celebrations, the @iandmcanal is offering a variety of brand-new experiences for visitors. Enjoy 250th anniversary-themed merchandise in the gift shop, explore an 18-panel “History of the I&M Canal” exhibit featuring original illustrations by acclaimed artist and author Tom Willcockson, or take part in an interactive public reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8.
