The I&M Canal Visitor Center is the perfect place to start your I&M Canal National Heritage Area Adventure. Located at 754 First Street, the heart of Downtown La Salle’s shopping district, the Visitor Center offers three experiences all in one beautifully restored space
Explore the Visitor Center
At the I&M Canal Visitor Center, you can discover the I&M Canal’s role in regional and American History through stunning exhibits, plan your explorations with their Canal Map Table, brochures, and knowledgeable staff, stamp your National Park Passport, and get more information on how to rent bikes from their Bike Share Program.
Browse the Gift Shop
The Lock 16 Gift Shop, located inside the Visitor Center, offers Illinois, Lincoln, and Canal-centric shirts, books, postcards, and mementos. They also provide a host of colorful floral decor, whimsical household treasures, artisan foodstuffs, cards, books, and clever gifts for children. The Gift Shop is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8 am – 4 pm.
Grab a bite at Lock 16 Café
Offering a quaint, vintage setting for a brief respite after exploring the Canal Trails, riding the Canal Boat, or shopping in Downtown La Salle, the Lock 16 Café serves delicious, handcrafted foods and beverages. The café is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8 am – 3 pm
La Salle County History Passport
Win a prize by exploring beautiful La Salle County. Pick up a La Salle County History Passport at the I&M Canal Visitor Center. Get the passport stamped at least 10 of the 12 available locations, many of which are located in La Salle. These La Salle locations include the I&M Canal Visitor Center, the I&M Canal Boat, and the Hegeler Carus Mansion.
