Whether you’re looking for a good bit of exercise or just a peaceful stroll in one of the Illinois Valley’s most scenic locations, the Hiking Trail at Rotary Park is perfect for you. The trail meanders through the hills, prairie grasses, and trees past ponds, rivers, and a lake to offer you great views in a tranquil setting. Ride your bike, walk your dog, or bring your fishing pole. This trail has something for everyone.
2.8 Miles Long
The hiking trail at Rotary Park is a total of 2.8 miles long, stretching past the pollinator garden, two ponds, over the Little Vermilion River to Prairie Lake, and back around. It has some of the most scenic views at the park and has elevation change at the beginning, middle, and end, making it great for exercise. Access to the trail is located next to the Rotary Park Dog Park, and it is great for running, walking, and biking. Dogs love it too!
Scenic Views
Hiking the trail at Rotary Park will make you feel like you’re transported outside the Illinois Valley. The rolling hills, vegetation, and waterways provide a visual escape from the everyday flatlands of the Midwest. This area of the park is teaming with deer and other wildlife. After a good rainfall, you might catch the waterfall at Waterfall Pond or the Little Vermillion quietly rushing along. Abundantly green in the Spring and Summer, vibrantly colorful in the Fall, and a blanket of pure white in the Winter, the views along the trail are worth seeing all year round.
Pollinator Garden
Early on in your hike, you’ll find a Pollinator Garden that was planted by the local Rotary International Club. Bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds love this spot, and the variety of colorful flowers and other plants is eye-catching even when the beautiful pollinators may not be around. This unique ecosystem of plants and wildlife is worth a look on your outward or inward hike along the trail.
Prairie Lake
Prairie Lake marks the halfway point on the hiking trail. The lake is fully stocked and a great spot for fishing, either on the sturdy pier or from the shoreline. There is a bathroom and a shelter at the lake, and the views surrounding the lake are arguably the best in all of Rotary Park.
